Brian Lockyer may have travelled 4500km in a fortnight last month, but it is his journey over the past 12 months that is far more impressive.
In mid January, Locky attended the Australian Deaf Games in Geelong, representing the NSW bowls team where he picked up a silver medal in the singles and a bronze in the pairs, while NSW finished runner-up in the overall competition - another silver medal.
The 2012 ADG finished with a gala closing ceremony at the Deakin University’s Costa Hall, with Brian announced the 2011 DSA Male Athlete of the Year, which is judged from 18 different sports.
When he got up to accept his trophy in front of 1000 people (which Locky reckoned it seemed more like 2000) he suffered stage fright and although he didn’t deliver a big speech, he appreciated the award very much.
The Games are held every three or four years after commencing in 1964. This year was the 16th time they have been held.
Last January Brian was named Walcha senior Sportsperson of the Year to kick off a memorable year for the big bloke.
It was then off to Perth for the sixth International Deaf Lawn Bowls Championships in April where he won three gold medals - singles, triples and overall teams.
In November Locky collected the 2AD APJ Law Sport Star of the Year, which is judged from across the Armidale region and more recently was voted the NSW Disabled Sportsman of the Year.
Although the next big tournaments are a few years down the track (with the Australian Bowls Championships in Alice Springs in 2014, International bowls in Ireland in 2015 and the next Australian Deaf Games in Adelaide 2016) no doubt our most decorated local sportsman in recent times will be hoping to continue his good form and attend the lot.
