Fight for independence

19 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
Walcha Council met with the facilitator investigating the future of the former NESAC councils, Gabrielle Kibble, last week.

The threat of amalgamation once again looms large since the break up of the alliance that used to include Walcha, Uralla, Armidale and Guyra councils.

General manager Jack O’Hara and mayor Bill Heazlett met Ms Kibble last Thursday morning to discuss both the community consultation process and the Council’s independent status.

“It proved to be a very amiable meeting with a sharing of many thoughts about the significant differences with Walcha’s Community of interests to the other councils’ interests,” Mr Heazlett said.

“Some of the issues raised included: Where do people shop? Walcha for food and an even split with Armidale/Tamworth for other goods; what has happened to our population? Dropped decades ago but now stabilised; where do government services come from? Local but extras mostly Tamworth (police and medical); importance of Forestry and National Parks discussed.”

Council has agreed to hold a public forum, which has been tentatively set down for Tuesday, April 13, at 9.30 am.

“The venue has yet to be decided but this will be advertised before this date. It would be pleasing if you made a note of this date in your diary or calendar so you can attend. A good role up would strengthen our case to remain a separated community. Numbers show interest, support and strength,” Mr Heazlett said.

“I have been asked to chair the meeting so that the facilitator can take notes and consider what is said by speakers. My understanding is that the facilitator will not be formally addressing the meeting, but she may share some of her thoughts and impressions at the end.

“To convey the comprehensive, distinct interests of Walcha, I would ask that you register your willingness to speak with the Mr O’Hara or myself. Each speaker will be limited to five minutes. With limited time there may not be an opportunity to hear from people who have not registered to speak. I will keep you informed of this. It is our opportunity to convince the facilitator that we are different.”

Mr Heazlett encouraged members of the community to keep individual and group submissions rolling in to the facilitator, as there was only one week to go to beat the deadline.
