Meet a local artist

This week the Walcha News catches up with artist Ross Laurie.

What is your association with Walcha? I was born here and I love the country

Is your art a profession or a hobby? A necessity!

Preferred media and why? Oil on canvas because it is beautiful, sticky and viscous. Charcoal because it is like drawing with dirt. Oil stick because it is physically engaging.

What (if anything) about Walcha inspires your art? Structure, forms, spaces, atmosphere, colour, mood, climate and sky.

If you had to move into another artistic field what would you choose? Music.

If art is your work what do you do to relax? RELAX?

Do you play music when you are working? Yes, jazz, blues and classical.

What do you watch on television? News.

What do you read? Art history, biography and criticism, politics and fiction.

Have you had a mentor or role model for your art? 800 years of art.

Has your work matured over the years? I hope so, it’s been 30 years.

Do you use shopping lists? Yes to visit art supply shops.

If you could invite any seven artists (alive or dead) to a dinner party who would you choose? Well, dead ones won’t argue or do the dishes and the living ones will drink all your grog and argue - so it’s too hard.

What advice would you give someone wanting to make a career out of art? The word habit is better than career. Know the art of the past and listen to people whose opinion you respect. Find an experience that is your own and try to record it in your own way.
