Walcha Council can continue its streetscape project through a $60,000 stimulus grant from the State Government’s Community Building Partnership scheme announced last month.
Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay welcomed the announcement of $417,000 for 13 projects in the electorate which with support funding from local councils and organisations will equate to a total of $1.2 million in infrastructure upgrades.
“Walcha Council is matching its grant which means a substantial project can be delivered through this funding,” he said.
“The aim of the package, which was part of this year’s State budget is to stimulate local business activity and create jobs through these infrastructure projects.
“The Walcha community will also benefit in the long term because of the improvement to its business centre.”
The project includes upgrading the footpaths in Fitzroy Street as part of a program which began two years ago.
Walcha Mayor Bill Heazlett said the upgrade would include artwork wherever possible to match the sculptures and other artistic work which has become a feature of the townscape.
“We are very pleased to receive this funding which will enable us to continue this project which will benefit the whole community,” he said.
Work so far has included new stone walls on the corner of Derby and Fitzroy Streets, sections of new footpath, the streetstall and bus shelter.
