The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) conference is an opportunity not to be missed if you are given the opportunity to go according to former attendee Bec Naylor of Jobs Australia, Walcha.

RYLA is a personal development and leadership program that began in Brisbane in the 1950s and is run by Rotary for youth around the world.

“I was approached by Rotary for two years before I agreed to register for RYLA and I am so glad I did,” Ms Naylor said.

“I initially had the impression that it would just be a feel good event and wasn’t sure I could afford the time. I didn’t know what to expect. I certainly had no idea it would be so relevant to my work and career aspirations.”

The Rotary clubs of District 9650 are once again seeking young people the ages of 18 and 15 years to take part in the 2010 program.

“I really enjoyed it, we had lots of motivational presentations from various industry leaders and took part in many fun skill building activities,” she said.

Ms Naylor said she returned from the program filled with enthusiasm for her career and ideas to incorporate into her job.

“When I attended the program I was working in administration and job placement,” Ms Naylor said.

“After attending RYLA I realised you have to step out of your comfort zone to take advantage of opportunities that come up and the challenges that come with them.”

Ms Naylor said the top leadership tips she took away from the program were to have a goal and a plan to get there; don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice when you need it; don’t give up if you get knocked back because there is always another opportunity; and listen and value other people’s opinions.

RYLA is open to anyone between 18 and 25 who has the desire to grow personally. The program be held on April 10-17, for more information contact Bob Burnett on 6777 2677.
