Ringers’ challenge

15 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
This weekend our town will host the biggest Campdraft and Rodeo event in NSW when more than 500 people compete in the annual Walcha Golden Gate Campdraft and Rodeo at Walcha showground.

The committee has received 1700 entries for the Campdraft events and 450 nominations for the Rodeo events with a new challenge and bar facilities introduced to make enjoying the spectacle even easier.

The action kicks off on Thursday at midday with the campdraft events which will culminate in the Ringers’ Challenge on Friday night at 7pm.

This new event was created by the organisers to provide an evening show for those taking part in the weekend as well as the general public. The Ringers Challenge is unique to Walcha and consists of a three round challenge for only 12 competitors.

The first round is a snaffle bit or two handed cutting event while the second round is a working cattle dog draft of five beasts. The final round is a steer ride that conforms to ACRA standards.

The Walcha Golden Gate Campdraft and Rodeo has been running for more than 50 years and is used by many as a trial run before the ABCRA national finals to be held in Tamworth next week. This ensures an high calibre competition not to be missed.

This year there will be a licensed bar around the perimeter of the arena so people can enjoy a drink while watching the show.

The junior Rodeo events commence at 9am on Saturday with the main program starting from 5pm that afternoon and running until late in the evening. Entry on Saturday costs $14 for adults and children (five-15) and pensioners $6 and children under five free.
