Show society committee returned for another term

03 Sep, 2010 06:30 PM
The Walcha Show Society held its annual general meeting on August 18, with 14 members attending.

President Max Ireland presented his report for 2009-10. He said it had once again been a “very good” show and thanked everyone who had helped in anyway.

Don Murchie thanked Mr Ireland for his report and for the tremendous amount of work he had done throughout the year and especially at show time.

The committee was then elected as a whole from last year with Cathy Noon being added as well. There is still room on the committee if anyone is interested in joining and helping at the show.

Mr Murchie was elected as secretary along with Ron Denham as treasurer. Mr Ireland thanked them for the work they have put into the show.

The president and chief stewards for 2011 will be elected at the next committee meeting to be held at the Ex-Services Club on Wednesday, September 15 at 7.30pm and Mr Ireland hopes for a good roll-up. His report follows.

“My first year as president was very much a learning affair, having very little to do with setting up for the show.

“I was quite astounded how much time and work is involved in preparing the main pavilion, thanks to Stephen King, Michael Sweeney and their helpers for their dedication to this section of the show. A special thank you must go to Andy McCormack as ring master and Tim Norton as chief ground steward and to all other chief stewards and their helpers.

“The main ground improvements this year were the re-wiring of the PA system and the upgrade of the water pipes. These two jobs were made harder by rain, machinery brake downs and some unnecessary criticism. The society also purchased a new stove for the kitchen; thanks Sonia for your catering and providing so many free meals for the workers.

To Don and Ron for their work and out side help.

Purchasing cattle to graze the grounds proved to be a great financial success and thanks to all the people involved in this system.

We also benefited form a huge reduction in the insurance of our buildings and the Walcha Council dropping all fixed water charges and now charging for water only.

Peter and Elaine Notman travelled up from Victoria to open the show, which was appreciated.

Megan Crittenden was our Miss Show Girl and was a very worthy contestant. On behalf of the Show Committee I would like to thank Megan.

John Dixon and Blair Finlayson were honoured with Life Membership for 4O years of membership of the committee. Thank you to all our sponsors who help in many different ways, it is greatly appreciated. Max lreland
