Coogee's column

Congratulations to one of life’s gentle people Shirley Davidson on being recognised in the Australia Day Honours list by the way of an Order of Australia Medal. Although Shirl hasn’t received her medal yet, the award is richly deserved following countless hours of voluntary work in our community over an extended period of time. Good on ya Shirl.

Not too many families in our area would have recipients of both the Walcha Citizen and Junior Citizen of the Year awards. Well that’s not the case at the Croudace Street household of the Hoy’s after mum Kate received the 2012 Citizen of the Year to join her daughter Judy who was awarded the 1990 Junior Citizen of the Year.

Well done also to 2012 Junior Citizen of the Year Josh Lockyer and community organisation winners the Nowendoc Bushman Carnival Association. Just when the NBCA was about to put Nowendoc on the map, along comes Malcolm Naden and spoils the party, which coincides with the next story.

A few weeks ago council supervisor Warick Johnson was working in the same vicinity as Brian Smith Transport was hauling logs, when Raggy pulled up to make an enquiry with ‘Wazza’. He was wondering what the orange painted rocks were all about when Warick informed him that they were to indicate to the council truck drivers the distance he wanted their load of gravel spread out. Brian then told ‘Waz’ that one of his drivers thought they may have been a drop off point for fugitive Malcolm Naden.

Last Sunday while the Golf Club presentations were being made, captain Willy Brennan informed his congregation that next Sunday is the annual ‘Bring a Mate’, day for a trophy donated by Don Brooks and each member should bring along a friend. One wag in the crowd turned around to former club boss Neil Dark and said: “Looks like you’ll be coming by yourself Darky.” The response can’t be printed here.
