RUGBY League qualified for the Turton Cup final with a strong nine-wicket victory over reigning premier’s Colt’s last Saturday at John Oxley Sportsground and will now play Round Swamp in this seasons decider this Saturday.

Batting after winning the toss Colts set League a modest total of 97 runs after they were in strife at 3/19 in their eighth over.

A 54 run fourth wicket partnership between opener Dale Brazel and captain Matt See added some respectability to the total but when they both were dismissed for 27 runs that was just about the end of the section.

The only other batsmen to reach double figures were Cameron Little and Brad Dade who both contributed 10 runs each. After a season off Adrian Hudson returned to the bowling crease capturing 4/27 off his seven overs including 4/4 in the space of 12 deliveries.

Making his debut for League Steve Adams snared 3/30 off his nine overs when he opened the bowling and his fellow opener Matt Robson chipped in with 2/14 off seven overs. League couldn’t have got away to a much worse start in their run chase when veteran Rob Laurie had his furniture disturbed by Cameron Little four deliveries into the innings without any runs on the board.

Sixty-year-old Peter Boyd was then joined by Adams and the pair then put on a match winning unbeaten century partnership to steer League to victory in the 27th over.

Boyd made 46 and Adams 44 with both batsmen hitting three boundaries each.

In the other match Bowling Club accounted for Kentucky after the visitors had set an assignment of 6/142. All rounder Rohan Szpitalak top scored with an unbeaten 30 followed closely by veteran Jamie Sweeney on 29 while Adrian Walsh assisted knocking up 22.

Most successful of the Bowling Club bowlers was Chris Watts claiming 2/23 off 10 economical overs and opener Hyde Thomson sent 10 tight overs with number three batsman Cameron Sweeney leading the way with an unbeaten 51 runs.

Watts completed a solid all round performance scoring 29 runs while South African Darby Louw made 27. Opening the bowling Szpitalak picked up 3/29 off his nine overs while youngster Tom Walsh was the only other successful Kentucky bowler.

This Saturday Round Swamp will be attempting to win their 17th Turton Cup final since they first won it in 1939 while League are hoping to have their name engraved on the trophy for the 10th time after winning their first in 1974.

In the other match Kentucky play Colts while Bowling Club have the bye.
