Cricket report

15 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
Last Saturday local cricket resumed after the festive season break with competition front runners Round Swamp and Colts defeating Kentucky and Bowling Club respectively.

Both matches were played on the John Oxley synthetic wickets following the big down pour last Thursday with parts of both grounds still fairly damp under foot which created low scoring games.

Batting first Kentucky managed to set Swamp a total of 126 thanks mainly to a 60 run fifth wicket partnership between Kirin Walters and Dave Woodley after the Kentucky were in strife at 4/27 in their 11th over. Walters top scored with 43 and Woodley contributed 38 while veteran opener Jamie Sweeney was the only other batsman to reach double figures with 14 runs. Swamp opener Josh Steel returned the figures of 4/20 off his nine overs, skipper Luke Wellings claimed 3/25 off 10 overs while Shane Young and Kyle Goodwin both sent down the maximum 10 overs to capture a brace of wickets each.

In reply Swamp passed their assignment with four wickets and seven overs up their sleeve. Their five top order batsmen all reached double figures with man of the match Shane Young leading the way with 36 runs which included four boundaries. Left hander Kyle Goodwin clobbered two 6s off successive Greg Buckland deliveries and two 4s on his way to 34, Tim Stackman remained 21 not out whereas openers Jason Burgess 13 and Barry Hoy 10 also contributed at the top of the order. Best of Kentucky bowlers was Kirin Walters who snared 3/17 off 10 economical overs while Buckland and Keith McPherson both grabbed a wicket each.

Next-door Bowling Club restricted Colts to modest total of 107 runs but couldn’t go on with the job. Colts lost wickets consistently with only number three Paul Pittman 424 and Matt See 15 troubling the scorers. In fact wides were the second top scorer on 21. Evergreen Bob Jex was the most successful Bowling Club trundler capturing 4/22 from seven overs and received assistance from the Sweeney brothers Cameron 93/24 off 10 overs) and Mitchell 92/11 off 5 overs). Bowling Club opener Steph Sweeney (11 runs) and Jex (14 runs) got their team off to a reasonable start of 23 runs but when deliveries were dismissed in the space of seven deliveries and Mitch Sweeney went for a golden duck next ball the rot set in.

Playing a man short Bowling Club lost their last eight batsmen for just 32 runs to be bundled out for 60 runs. Left arm opener Cameron Little picked up 4/29 off eight overs to lead the Colts charge, fellow opener Will Fletcher was sharp claiming 2/20 off six overs while Pittman completed a man of the match performance capturing 2/12 off three and a bit overs.

Point score: Swamp 48, Colts 44, Kentucky 30, Bowling Club 28, League 26. This week Colts v League (John Oxley) and Kentucky v Bowling Club (Park).
