RUGBY UNION REPORT

26 Jun, 2009 05:00 AM
On Saturday the Walcha Rams fought courageously in a last gasp (14-13) loss to the Inverell Highlanders. In wet, greasy conditions the Rams went out looking to redeem a narrow loss in the first round to Inverell. The boys were fully aware of the task that lay ahead with Inverell at full strength for probably the first time this season. The heavy track favoured the visitors, that fielded a pack that looked to be more ‘Clydesdale’ compared to our ‘thoroughbreds’. And if conditions were firmer our ‘sprinters’ could well have outstretched their ‘stayers’ ( Inverell forwards) down the final straight. The game developed into an arm wrestle early with neither side able to grab a clear advantage in the early exchanges. The dead lock was broken with a try to the highlanders, but Walcha looked to have a bit more flair in attack and crossed the visitors line out wide with Steve ‘Dizzy’ Eveleigh grabbing a ‘meat pie’. Walcha couldn’t add the sauce from a difficult conversion attempt. At half time ‘brains trust’ (Barry Hoy and Andrew Crawford), stressed to the boys if they could limit their handling errors in the second half, then that would go a long way to winning the match. And as the sun peaked its nose through the grey abyss, the momentum swung towards the home side. Walcha started to control possession and with it came some great forward play and ball retention. A good bust and offload by B2 (Lachie Brown) sent the English member of the UN delegation to Walcha (Stevie Harwood) scurrying over the try line, to create a 10-7 lead over Inverell. The Welsh member of the delegation(Gwylim Evans) and Jason Latham again continued to put Walcha at the right end of the field with penetrating kicks and constant pressure , which resulted in points with a penalty goal to ‘Dizzy’ Eveleigh. However the ‘fat lady’ had not yet sung and Inverell managed to steal the game with a late try and conversion for a 14-13 win. There were some great efforts across the park. Jock Fletcher looked as if he may have overdosed on his angry pills, as he pulled off countless “beaut” big hits. Ciaran O’Gorman was a constant menace to his former side, where his mobility was a great complement to B1 and B2s (Luke and Lachie Brown) devastating running. Ed Churchill, Steve Eveleigh and Richard Young all shone in difficult conditions for backs. Try Scorers: Stevie Harwood, Steve Eveleigh and one conversion. Points: 3 Ciaran O’Gorman 3, Ed Churchill 2 and Steve Eveleigh 1. Players’ player Jock ‘Hammer’ Fletcher.

Reserve Grade

In a bid to keep Walcha’s finals train on the rails, the local reservists got off to a cracking start on a slippery track on Saturday. Jack “Hazem” Garrad and Josh “Shorty” Steele got the red and white express rolling, with two scathing runs which resulted in early points for the resurgent Rams. The ‘Ram juggernaught’ continued to gain momentum as Walcha grabbed two more tries before half time to secure a bonus point. The half time break has proven to be a bit of a danger for the reserves lately, with us often falling into an early second half siesta. This was again the case as Inverell scored two tries and started to starve the Rams of possession. However fresh legs were bought on to inject some coal in to the tiring reserve grade engine and this bought instant results as the Rams ran away with a healthy 38-17 win. The forward pack was outstanding. Sandy Cameron, Hugh Waugh and Dave “Benjamin Button’ Green were all instrumental in keeping Walcha rolling forward. The side has also been buoyed by the inclusion of a new face to the team Chris Robson. Chris brings a tonne of ‘youthful exuberance’ to the team and his ‘thirty odd’ years of rugby experience will be essential in reserve grade’s fortunes as we move towards the business end of the season. ‘Mr Reliable’ Glenn Olrich was again outstanding, especially in defence where he is rarely beaten. Our two big wingers Charlie “Lomu’ Cordingly and Josh “Shorty” Steele also played strongly. Try scorers: Sandy Cameron, Josh Steel, Francois and one conversion, Jock Nivison. Point machine Jack Garrad added to his ‘Bradman-esque’ average with two tries and three conversions.

Points: Jock Nivison 3, Glen Olrich 2 and Jason “Kenworth” Burgess and Aaron “Mack” O Connell 1. The club would like to thank the many sponsors who enjoyed their sponsors lunch on Saturday. It is their support that keeps the club healthy and feeds the club’s success on the Park. It is also poignant that Walcha were officially awarded the inaugural Neil Porter Memorial Shield from their aggregate win in the first round at Inverell. It is a grand piece of silverware that will be greatly coveted for many years to come. Finally the boys would again like to thank the fantastic support from the crowd on the weekend. For some more great rugby action, please follow the teams out to Barraba for this weekend’s clash. First grade are equal third and reserve grade second on their respective ladders.
