Last Wednesday, the St Patrick’s children, families and staff gathered to celebrate NAIDOC Day.
NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee. The aim of NAIDOC is to promote the rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage to all people on a regional, national, and even international level.
It is also a celebration of the uniqueness of Indigenous traditions and cultures and recognition of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality for Indigenous people.
The day began with a Welcome to Country’ was then performed by our special guests, Amaroo Board members: Aunties Shirley Davidson and Patty Davies and Mass celebrated by Father Brian.
After Mass the children joined the special guests and captains in the official Flag Raising Ceremony.
Following the ceremony the indigenous members led the St. Patrick’s community to the bottom block for the formal assembly during which all classes performed for their parents. The assembly finished with a performance from the St Patrick’s school choir.
“Wednesday was a fabulous day,” said co-ordinator Anna Flanagan.
“Thank you to all involved, to our special visitors and parents who were able to attend, to the teachers who organised and finally the enthusiastic children who make us all so proud.”
