Times improved when two out standing young runners won this year’s Lions Mile footrace.
Thomas Martin won the men’s division in five minutes which is the best recorded time over the past seven years while Erica Sweeney slashed an incredible 35 seconds off the women’s record held by Narelle Heard for the past 14 years.
In the men’s division Michael Sweeney ran another huge race to come in second in 5.03 while Jesse Brown cut 30 seconds off his time last year to come in third in 5.18. Ricky Brown came in fourth in 5.21 and Brad Partridge fifth in 5.26.
“Thomas will only improve on his great first victory and I’m sure will have the men’s record in his sights for future years,” organiser Lance Partridge said. “Erica’s record breaking first up run in 5.03 should always stand as a proud moment for this great runner. Erica has improved to now be up with the best National Cross Country runners with incredible potential for future running events.”
Nerina Du Plessis came in second place to Erica, in 5.21 also taking 17 seconds off the previous record.
“This was an outstanding effort for Nerina as sprinting around a rough racetrack is very different to her dedicated distance training. Michelle Wayte also ran a great time of 5.54 to come in third. Michelle is yet another very versatile sports athlete with great potential,” Partridge said.
“Alex Mathew’s time of six minutes would have won most of our women’s events, which goes to show the depth of talent in this year’s field.”
Jess Mathews also ran a good time in the heat of the day.
Anne Martin and Bernie Brady won the Walcha Elders work boots concluding what Lions Club president Bruce Davidson could only describe as another very successful Lions Mile.
