‘WATERLOO’ jackeroo Robert Best reckons his boss Ross King came up with a pearler of a reason about why he had to knock off work early one day last week. Besty was left close to speechless when ‘Diddles’ the 2009 Walcha show cake baking champion indicated he had to head over to brother Steve’s property ‘Blackfellow’s Gully’ to receive some Croquet lessons.
ONE only imagines the comment Middle Street resident Pam Clare received from her husband Garth when she returned home with a six-pack of hand towels after she had originally set out to get half a dozen ‘Quiltone’ toilet rolls.
THERE was action a plenty at the same Clare dwelling during recent times when eldest son Patrick fell off his bed while operating his Play Station. Apparently Pat got that tangled up between the bed and nearest wall he had all sorts of trouble getting out of the little predicament he found himself in.
LAST week after visiting the pool Kylie Matthews had to call her father Noel Breeze for assistance after finding the battery was flat in her vehicle. Instead of using jumper leads Noel decided to tow Kylie's mode of transport (which he did successfully) but caused a few hiccups when he pulled up in the middle of Middle Street to untie the tow rope. The only problem was a truck was travelling down the street at the time and it wasn’t long before Kylie requested that Noel move his vehicle quickly and lets just say - in no uncertain terms.
THE gremlins were in the system last week but the mistake made in naming the Elders Rams touch footy team had nothing to do with anyone else except me. Any locals would have been aware that the young bloke second from the left in the back row was none other than player of the grand final Tim Jackson - who looks nothing like Tim Stackman who was incorrectly listed. Sorry about that Tim and hopefully there is a re-run of the photo elsewhere in this edition.
STILL on touch no doubt three members of the Wizards would have been feeling a whole lot better last Monday than they did seven days earlier. Rumour has it that the thrill seekers trio decided a friendly wrestle on the cricket pitch while heading home after presentation day would be the way to go but one bloke ended up with a sizeable amount of skin missing following the bout.
THE following day a couple of council supervisors Steve Roberts and Steph ‘Gomez’ Sweeney thought they had struck pay dirt while inspecting the Walcha Oval. Apparently an amount of money was collected from beside the wicket made up of various denominations, no doubt lost during the wrestle a few hours before. Oh yeah and one lens from a pair of glasses.
A little while back punters Fred Henry and John Porter outlaid $10 on a quaddie and received $6.45 in return for their win. Well on Tuesday afternoon ‘Fredum’ and ‘Port’ broke their record when their winning $10 quaddie investment on the ‘dishlickers’ paid the handsome dividend of $6.15.
THE Walcha veterans golf team currently lead the New England pennants competition by a point from Uralla with Armidale and Guyra also included in the field. Last week Betty Borthwick won the division 2 section of the event on 36 points and Joy McLeod was runner up on 32. Best of the blokes were Col Higgins 41 points, Warwick Hogan 39 and Paddy Archdale 38.
THE mini mixed basketball competition conducted over the past fortnight was finalised on Tuesday night with mixed reactions by the players that were involved. Played under a ‘Funtime’ format with no overall winners most participants enjoyed themselves but there were comments about it depending who you were drawn to play. Some players reckoned it would have been a whole lot more enjoyable if a few players were aware they weren’t going to win a sheep station.
WITH a bit of fine-tuning there is no reason why mini mixed basketball can’t be a goer and it was great to see so many players having a run over the four nights. Hopefully a few of the players who turned out will put their hands up for a trot in the main competition which commences Monday May 4, 20-09.
BEFORE round 3 of the NRL my son Ben was running equal second in the Armidale Express tipping competition on 24 points. When I showed him the results he mentioned to me that he was kicking my butt as I only had 20 points. Quickly he was reminded that he hadn’t even selected a card up to that stage I had been picking them for him. Which makes me wonder why I didn’t take the same card myself.

FINALLY best of luck to the organisers of the Walcha Central School’s 150 year celebrations commencing today with an assembly at the school followed by a ball on Friday night and a street parade and fete on Saturday. No doubt there will be plenty of old faces returning to Walcha for the celebrations and hopefully weather conditions will be kind.
