The Walcha Rams travelled to Scone to take on the Scone Brumbies on Saturday and it was a star studded line up of reserve graders who ran out first to do battle.
The reserve grade has some very exciting young players mixed with some experienced older players and it was club stalwart Andy Adams who went over for the first try near the posts. Jack Garrard who is having a cracking season with the boot slotted the goal and it was Scone to kick off again. Ed Churchill making his return to Walcha after being away for two weeks was a fantastic boost to the back line and produced his speed and skill to run in the next try, the first of a double for him.
The team as a whole dominated a spirited Brumbies outfit with Jack Garrard also scoring two tries as well as kicking five goals.
Other try scorers were Charlie Cordingly, David Louw and Chris Watts which turned a half time score of 26-0 into a full time score of 50-0. Coach Blomfield was very pleased with the defensive effort and was able to make use of his big bench of players who travelled to Scone.
Players players’ Charlie Cordingly and Ed Churchill Points: Ed Churchill 3, Charlie Cordingly 2 and 1 Hugh Waugh and Andy Adams 1.
1st Grade
You always know you are in for a battle with the very physical Scone team, and Saturday was no exception. Walcha was spurred on by a good crowd of supporters and were soon on the board with a great try to Jason Latham.
Latho has always been a great player but is really having a blinder this season linking so well with Steve “The Pom” Harwood. Gwilym, our resident Welshman, slotted the goal, the first of seven conversions and one penalty.
The Scone kick off did not go the ten yards so it was back to the middle for a scrum restart. Even though Scone was a big pack it was already evident that the Walcha boys were on top and continued to totally dominate up front protecting our own put in and destroying the opposition scrum on their put in. Latho scored again and then Franscois in his first run in first grade busted through the opposition defence to score another and a half time score of 24-0.
The second half Walcha continued to dominate as usual Lachie Brown was hard to stop and Fletch and Sam Lisle made some huge busts straight up the middle. Gus Burnell trailed Latho up to the line and accepting a neat pass to score near the posts.
Gwilym then finished off a good backline run to score before Gus Burnell trailed Latho again to score his double. “Dicko” Young didn’t see the ball much during the day but made his own luck coming into some scrappy play, grabbing the ball and showing everyone a clean pair of heels to score next.
Alex Laurie scored right on the bell to make the score 57-0. Player’s player Angus Burnell. Points: Jason Latham 3, 2 Charlie Street 2, Jock Fletcher and Ciaran O’Gorman 1. Come down to Walcha Oval this weekend and barrack for the Walcha Rams when they take on the Tamworth Magpies.
