CONGRATULATIONS to Walcha Rams back rower Angus Laurie on his selection in the NSW Country Colts train-on squad after solid performances for Central North U20s over the past few weeks. 'Big Kev' may have started following in the representative rugby footsteps of his father, NSW Farmers Association president Jock Laurie who was selected for Country as a youngster.

TWO other Ram players Ed Churchill and Dean Turner, along with ex-Walcha player Archie Fletcher (now Gunnedah) were members of the Central North U20s that won their semi final at the Country championships 20-19 before going down to Newcastle 16-0 in the final at Dubbo last weekend.

STILL on rep rugby, Rams utility forward Steve Liddle was the lone Walcha representative in the Central North Kookaburras squad that defeated the New England Lions 24-22 in the final of the Richardson Shield at Dubbo last Sunday. The previous day Central North rolled Western Plains 38-17 and New England belted Far North Coast 51-17 in their semi final matches.

FIVE Walcha junior cricketers who are playing for Uralla Colin Thomson, Ryan Relf, Thomas Boyd, Tim Partridge and Ben Watts are currently halfway through a grand final in the Armidale and District U12s competition. At the moment C.S.C Blue lead Uralla by three runs 130 to 127 with one of the highlights at the Uralla innings a towering six hit out of Harris Park by Colin Thomson. Best of luck this Saturday boys.

FOUR Walcha District students that attend N.E.G.S were members of the school swimming squad that won the Rotary Shield at the Armidale combined swimming carnival last week. Emily Rogers and Jessica Cameron from Walcha joined forces with Rowan McNaught (Yarrowitch) and Mikaeli Brett (Kentucky) to assist the team to victory.

OXLEY Darts club have only their third president in 19 years after Daryl McElroy took over from Charlie Brown at the associations recent AGM. Charlie had served for 11 years after he relieved John Green who had handled presidential duties during a seven-year period before that.

WALCHA junior golfer Andrew Bowden was a member of the Central North team that won the Baker Trinder Shield for the first time in eight years last weekend. In the final at Dubbo 'Buddah' defeated his Hunter Valley opponent 2 and 1 after rounding up a player from the reigning champions North West 3 and 2 the previous day. Against Western on Saturday Andrew was too good for his opponent 3 and 1, which made it a clean sweep hat trick for 'Buddah' over the weekend. Central North gave Hunter a 6-1 touch up in the final.

BEST of luck to the Northern Inland U15 soccer team (which includes Petrina Martin, Rachel Fenwicke and Kate Holstein) when they take on Macquarie in the Hunter Valley this weekend. WHEN Apsley won the veterans touch football competition last Sunday week they became the first team to win back to back premierships in that division since it commenced in 2000/01. The other winners have been 35+ (2001,03,05), Racqueteers (2202), Brumbies 92004,07) and Wizards (2006). It will be interesting to see if Apsley can compete the hat trick next season.
