DUE to the championships being contested the course will be closed over the weekend but Walcha members have an opportunity to compete at Uralla on Sunday. Walcha will play Uralla for the Crossman Shield for the first time in years with Warwick ‘Ben’ Hogan donating trophies for the best Walcha and Uralla player. All the action commences at 11.30am.

LAST Sunday eight Walcha golfers played in the Barraba Open with great success. Veterans Crichton Barr and ‘Ben’ Hogan won the nett after carding a creditable +11, Simeon Cross and Steph Sweeney won the scratch section on +2 while John Mann and Ray Boyd picked up a sweepstakes ball on +8. The remaining duo Max Holstein and Fred Henry came home with +3. Well-done boys.

CONGRATULATIONS to Central North U16s Rugby player Josh Cameron on his selection in the Country train on squad following the Country championships in Nowra last weekend. A pat on the back also to his team mate Kerrod Alley who performed well over the weekend during his first representative outing.

THE Walcha Rams certainly gave Scone some hurry up last weekend when they defeated the host club 107-0 in both senior grades. The Rams rounded up Scone 57-0 in first grade while the reserves cruised home 50-0. This Saturday Walcha are at home here at the Park against Tamworth who is fresh off a 52-11 win over Barraba last Saturday. Go the Rams.

PROP forward Angus Burnell must be on the verge of being de-registered from the front rowers union (if he hasn’t already been) following his performance in Scone last Saturday. Scoring one try was bad enough but crossing the stripe twice is just not on for front rowers.

URALLA Rugby League club travelled to Inverell last weekend and won two of their three games. Daniel Broadbent landed two conversions to assist the Tigers to a 36-14 win in President’s Cup. The Uralla women including Robyn Kelly rounded up the home team 5-4 in their League Tag match but unfortunately the Tiger Cubs U18s with a number of Walcha players on board received a bit of a lesson.

ALTHOUGH the Walcha U14s finished on the wrong side of a lop sided scoreboard there were promising signs during their junior Rugby League match at Tamworth last Saturday. One of the smartest players on the field winger Ben Gizzle deserves special mention especially for the way he dropped his bigger opponents with copybook tackles.

ALL Central North junior Rugby Union roads headed to Walcha last Sunday when John Oxley Sportsground was ‘Packed to the Rafters’ with visiting players from throughout the North and North West. Walcha junior Rugby Union president Anthony Uren was thrilled with the roll up and couldn’t have ordered better weather conditions for the carnival.

AROUND lunchtime a representative match was played between Central north and New England U15s with a number of Walcha players sprinkled throughout both teams. Thomas Martin (who scored a try), Alexander Laurie and Lachlan Creighton were members of the Central North squad while Jock Fortescue, Ben Partridge, Robert Smith, Dallas Laurie and Woolbrook’s Ollie Crawford took the field for New England. For the record Central North won the match and now both teams can look forward to the Country championships at Moree this weekend.
