The 380 nominations received were up by 40 on previous years including 33 open bull riders, 29 saddle bronc riders and 32 team ropers. The junior events were also well supported with 32 nominations.
The stock proved too good for many though, particularly in the open bull and saddle bronc events, where only five bull riders and 10 saddle bronc hopefuls ended up qualifying.
Walcha was represented by nine keen cowboys: recent Canadian champion Carl Green, Harry King, Ben Foggerty, Timothy Partridge, Gerard Oversby, Tyson Smith, Drew Bird, Justin Till and junior cowgirl Hannah Partridge.
However only Harry King managed to take home a prize.
The crowd was kept amused in between events by Big Al the clown and a jumping castle and mechanical bull ride was on hand for the children.
Unlike the past few years, the weather was perfect with just a light shower in the afternoon to settle the dust and clear skies for the rest of the evening. Organisers are hoping the weather holds for this weekend’s campdraft, which will run from Thursday to Sunday at the Walcha Showground.
Winners of last weekend’s rodeo events were as follows: open bull ride - Chris Lowe; saddle bronc - Robert Boady; bareback - Wade Clifford; novice saddle bronc - Harry King; novice bull ride - Jackson Gill; junior bull ride - equal Mick Knight and Brady Gray; breakaway roping - Dianne Parkinson; team roping - Norm Stags and Lance Hutton; rope and tie - Campbell Hodson; ladies barrel - Cathirna Hutton; steer wrestle - Glen Chape; steer un-decorating - Brooke Mapp; junior breakaway roping - Jackson Dening; under 18 steer ride - Eric Richardson; under 14 steer ride Christopher Wilson; under 11 steer ride - Samuel Sutheron; under 18 barrel Rebecca Roberts; under 14 barrel - Braith Nok; under 11 barrel - Naomi Crawley.
