The Cowboys scored first after just three minutes but by half time the Roos had hit back to lead 16/12 thanks to tries from winger Glenn Olrich, centre Lachlan Brown and utility player Mitch Eveleigh. Skipper Troy Yarnold raised the flags on two occasions and then extended the lead to 22/12 with a converted try of his own.
Down but not out, Dungowan bounced back with two tries in the space of three minutes to fullback Beau Ryan who converted both to take his team to 24/22 lead which finished up the final score.
Too many mistakes inside their own territory led the Roos’ downfall, but by the same token all players were in there having a go. Fullback Shane Rule laid on the first try to Olrich with a deft kick into the kiosk corner and received three group best and fairest points from the referee for his solid all round performance.
Rule had plenty of traffic coming at him which he shut down time and time again when confronted by runaway Cowboys Dungowan custodian Ryan who collected two Group best and fairest points while Brown received one point.
Three club points went to second rower Lachie Laurie who recovered from a kamikaze hit from one of the visiting players before handing in a good display in both attack and defence.
The two best and fairest points were given to five eighth Yarnold while Rule, Olrich and halfback Jason Latham all received one each. Players’ player was Shane Rule.
Winger Dean Kelly certainly punched above his weight throughout the contest keen to mix it with the Cowboys in both attack and defence.
This weekend the Roos will take part in the West’s knockout in Tamworth where they do battle with Dungowan first up on Saturday.
