Abbey started managing the student school banking last month. This requires that she accepts the student’s deposits and processes them through the school banking system before balancing the deposits and arranging for the funds to be banked at the Commonwealth Bank.
All students from Kindergarten- through to Year 12 can utilise school banking.
School banking is completed before school from 8.30 - 9am on Tuesdays (so that students can enjoy their recess time) in the primary building corridor where students will be able to present their deposits for processing. New students are welcome and can collect their banking packages from school.
Abbey volunteered to complete the school banking and has been learning the role with the assistance of Commonwealth Bank employee Mary Moran.
In six months Abbey will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Attainment, which she will be able to include in her resume.
“We are trying to encourage students to volunteer to assist us and gain recognition for their efforts,” said Margaret Gardiner Walcha branch manager of the Commonwealth Bank.
“This is a way we can assist students in our local community to further their education with life experience.
“School Banking is a fantastic way to raise funds for the school, participating schools benefit by receiving a commission on every deposit made at the school and $5 for every Activated Account via the program – a great fundraising activity, it also helps with our children’s financial literacy.”
Accounts can be opened through the school, online or in the local branch and each account opened at the local branch is also eligible to receive a platybank.
“We think that when it comes to a child’s education, knowing how to manage money is as essential as English, maths, science or the arts,” Mrs Gardiner said.
