Opera North West is delighted to present a concert which will feature some of Australia’s leading singers (two of whom are from the region) accompanied by a pianist, string quartet and a flute player.
Highlights will include excerpts from opera and operettas as well as much-loved musicals.
The public will be invited to pack a picnic and enjoy the outdoor performance in the surrounds of historic Langford. A dinner in the Langford dining room will also be available following the performance, as well as hampers to enjoy during the concert.
Opera North West, based in Delungra, was initially formed for Opera in the Paddock, but the company has broadened its activities to present a range of exciting and innovative programs featuring opera, operetta, musicals, instrumental and orchestral works.
As a non-profit organisation, Opera North West has secured government sponsorship in order to stage the concert exclusively in Walcha this year. As a result, both the location of Langford and the town of Walcha will feature prominently in promotion of the event across NSW and Queensland.
Based on the success of its first year in Walcha, Opera North West intends to grow the event an host it annually. Organisers say that they expect the attendance numbers to be modest for the first year – around 200 or 300 hundred - but if it is popular this could grow to more than 1000 in the future.
“In its first year of operation, the concert in Walcha cannot be expected to attract the same numbers as Opera in the Paddock which has been running for over ten years and attracts approximately 1,500,” said soprano and artistic director Peta Blyth.
“It is hoped however, that with the support of the community, the event can develop into something that could bring substantial benefits to the town of Walcha and surrounds.”
To work towards this organisers would like to provide details of the event to the public and discuss ways in which the community and business houses may become involved.
“We are interested in looking at ways in which the event could benefit the community,” said Peta.
“This involvement would not include the organisation or management of the event, but may initially include catering, accommodation and fundraising opportunities.”
Opera North West and Walcha Council will hold a morning tea on Monday, August 25, at 11am in the Walcha Shire Council Chambers.
