After both national anthems, Years 3-6 performed ‘The same but different’, a presentation comparing Australia and Botswana through Power Point pictures and information on native animals, national parks and native inhabitants.
Following this excellent presentation years K 1 and 2 entertained the CWA members with a presentation of the African folk tale ‘Clever jackal gets away’ using illustrations they had drawn in class.
The children had also produced a very large colourful display on the back wall made up of artwork, including hand prints, animals and other cultural features with the Botswana flag being the centrepiece. This was quite spectacular.
Guest speaker Kevin Squires, having spent some time in Botswana, gave a very interesting talk using PowerPoint, video and props such as a beautifully carved folding chair, bowls and paintings.
He told of some scary times; once when a hippopotamus surfaced beside their canoe in the wetlands and then coming face to face with an angry elephant where he and his guide had to quietly detour around for about three kilometres to get back to their vehicle.
Overall it was a most enjoyable learning day and members said they were grateful to the principal Mrs Annette Brown and staff for once again allowing them to share their international studies with the children and the work that goes into it.
