The works on show are the result of two years work by the trio who chose to exhibit in Walcha rather than Sydney because they believe it is emerging as a centre of excellence for committed and emerging Australian artists.
The three painters said they hope their show draws interest and attention to the town of Walcha and makes a contribution to the local economy through local tourism.
The exhibition was opened last Friday by local painter Ross Laurie who said he believed Walcha was a cultural laxative. Mr Laurie then went on to explain the joy of taking time out to look at a painting, something evolving generations are becoming unlikely to do owing to the impact of technology on concentration spans.
Kate addressed the record crowd in attendance and thanked her fellow artists for their support in pulling the exhibition together. Ms Durack also shared the anecdote of when she arrived in Walcha and approached the gallery for an exhibition.
“Carley told me she was booked out for two years and she didn’t do craft,” she laughed. “True to her word it was about two years ago that I approached her – and luckily I didn’t produce any craft.”
The Walcha News caught up with Kate and will publish the interview next week. For more photos turn to page 5.
