More than 30 cyclists took a break in McHattan Park on their way from Gloucester to Armidale where they stayed the night.
The group is completing a 2300km bike ride for 14 days from Melbourne to Brisbane via Sydney to raise money for cancer research.
Adam Smiddy was a talented triathlete and physiotherapist who was cut down in his prime by an aggressive melanoma in 2006 aged just 26. His friends began the Smiddy Challenge 10 years ago to fight the good fight against cancer in his name.
The 7 in 7 got started when Adam Smiddy’s best mate and cycling mentor Mark ‘Sharky’ Smoothy created the original flagship Smiddy event, the Smiddy Challenge (which goes from Brissie to Townsville). When that was a hit, Sharky thought he’d just keep on going and circumnavigate the whole of Australia split into different legs.
Team Smiddy has been completing a leg a year and this year they have come full circle.
Seven years in the making, this epic two-legged ‘race’ covers over 2300km. Cycle leg one from Melbourne to Sydney was held on October 3 to October 9 and after a two day rest leg two started in Sydney on October 12 and will end in Brisbane this Saturday.
Smiling for Smiddy supports cancer research that has national and international impact.
Funds enable the dedicated team of scientists at Mater Research to undertake potentially life-saving work into the causes, prevention and improved treatments of cancer.
More than $5 million has been raised since 2006.
Current Mater Research efforts include research into melanoma, prostate, breast and ovarian cancers as well as complementary therapies for cancer patients.
Smiling for Smiddy also contributes to the work being done nationally by Melanoma Patients Australia.
