Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts Troy Grant was joined by local MPs Adam Marshall and Kevin Anderson at Parliament House to announce the successful local government area who will have the opportunity to select a sculpture at the close of the exhibition.
Mr Grant said the NSW government was pleased to bring a sculpture to regional NSW which will enhance the already established and popular tourist spot, Open Air Gallery at Walcha.
“The sculpture will add to the rich arts and cultural sector of the Walcha region and ensure regional NSW has the opportunity to experience the popular exhibition which attracts around half a million people to the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk.
“The NSW government is proud to support this fantastic opportunity to bring Sculpture by the Sea to regional NSW by providing $20,000 to purchase a sculpture which will no doubt be a much loved asset to the community,” Mr Grant said.
Mayor Janelle Archdale said council was thrilled to be receiving this grant which will add a significant piece of art to town.
“This is a fabulous initiative by the state government and I thank them for the opportunity to further develop our unique Open Air Gallery,” she said.
“Thanks must also go to staff at Walcha Council who put an enormous amount of time and effort into the successful grant submission.”
Northern Tablelands MP Mr Marshall said he was proud that Walcha Council was successful in the competitive application process.
“This is a unique opportunity for our community to further stamp its title as the public art capital of regional NSW.
“The richness and talent of our region’s art is first class and this sculpture will complement our already popular exhibition featuring over 40 works from local and international artists,” Mr Marshall said.
Walcha Council will select a sculpture at the closing of the exhibition on 9 November and the sculpture will be relocated to Walcha shortly after.
Sculpture by the Sea received 21 submissions for the regional acquisition program and expressions of interest were reviewed by an independent panel. Sculpture by the Sea 2014 opens today and will run until November 9.
