Sweeney allowed his opponent the luxury of one extra point in a replay of last year’s decider, which ended up 3-0 (0-2, 9-0, 9-6) and now has won his last eight in succession.
Last year’s B grade runner-up Kevin Mathews went one better this time around when he rounded up Jim Nivison 3-1 (9-1, 3-9, 9-3, 9-2) to win his grade.
After a sluggish start Lachlan Brown came back from 2-1 down to get home against 58-year-old veteran Murray Rose 3-2 (7-9, 9-2, 7-9, 9-5, 9-5) to take out C grade after winning Division 2, B grade last year.

A-grade in 2013, either ‘Lionel’ is slipping or ‘Board’ is improving or maybe it is a bit of both.
Another member of the older brigade Andrew Elliott had to pull out all stops against newcomer Dean Lummis before the 60-year-old won D grade 3-2 (9-2, 9-4, 5-9, 9-10, 9-7) in a match that could have gone either way.
Numbers were down on the previous years with just four grades contested compared to eight in 2013, including an extra four grades in Division 2.
