AS this will be the last column before the snowy-bearded, red-suited chap arrives, may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hopefully 2015 goes just the way you want it to. A big thank you to the ladies at the Walcha News who translate my handwriting into print each week and also to the people who get a mention here taking it in the spirit it is meant to be.

IT was a very sad day for Australia when hostages Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson were killed in the siege in Sydney earlier in the week. Niangala school teacher Hannah Crawford was even sadder than most after she found out about 38-year-old barrister Katrina, who was a close friend from their school days in Sydney. I don’t know about you but it really makes me wonder what will be next.
ONE of nature’s gentle people Shirley Davison passed away last week and it was a nice touch that a minute’s silence was held for her before the final Walcha Central School Assembly for 2014 commenced last Friday. The funeral service for Shirley will be held at 2pm today at the Anglican Church followed by refreshments at the Parish Hall. Condolences to Shirley’s family and her many friends.
AT the same assembly my favourite sister-in-law Sandra Laurie was acknowledged for the contribution she has made to Walcha Central both during and outside normal school hours. Sandy commenced duties at the Walcha Central School in 1981 and has been employed there on and off (time out when having children) ever since. Good on ya Sandy you thoroughly deserve the accolades.
THREE young ladies were thanked for the flower arrangements at the assembly and what do you think Phyllis Hoy, Helen Wake and Leone Mackaway received in appreciation for their decorations? Flowers of course.
WORD has it that a certain South Street resident took a dip in Blair’s Gully at the back of the Commercial Hotel last weekend but it wasn’t intentional. Apparently the bloke with a three lettered nickname starting with ‘A’ slipped on the rocks while crossing the gully and ended up in the drink.
BRAGGING rights in the South Street Boyd residence this week would certainly have been with Daniel despite his team Kentucky being rolled by Rugby League. Daniel had his old man Wayne caught behind by keeper Bob Jex but must have been getting a bit concerned when umpire Rob Laurie was taking his time with the decision. ‘Pothole’ took the decision out of Truck’s hands when he walked knowing full well he had nicked the ball and wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he was given not out.
COUNCIL office staff member Loretta Blanch was at the same game watching her son Daniel play for Kentucky. During the match Loretta was concerned when Daniel ran past a bloke that didn’t seem interested in chasing the ball at all until she figured out the bloke in question was actually the umpire.
TALENTED mountain bike rider Jack Feltham came a cropper in the opening round of the National titles at Ujangs in Victoria last weekend. Jack suffered a nasty gash to his arm during the second lap of his four lap race and was unable to finish. Jack hopes to be fully fit before round two of the championships are held in Pemberton, Western Australia next year.
ORANDUMBIE golden retriever ‘Tess’ hasn’t taken kindly to the recent storms and has attempted to escape the weather violence by trying to gain entry to the Kermode abode via the cat flap. The only problem is Tess is too big for the flap and can only get her head and a front leg inside before getting stuck. According to Carnie her husband Daniel is not overly impressed with the scratch marks that have appeared on the red cedar door each time Tess has tried to enter the building.
DON’T forget the Gary Kelleher Memorial golf trophy will be contested on Boxing Day and according to Gary’s brother Christie most of the Kelleher Klan will be home this year. Come on get a few mates together for a hit and few beers. Not a bad way to spend part of Boxing Day really.
THE Swimming Club held its Christmas party on Tuesday where the Christmas hamper was eventually won by Cindy Swanton, while Sarah Nivison collected second prize. There was a little hiccup when all the tickets didn’t reach the ‘practise’ draw but it didn’t take long for club president Angus Warden to smooth things over and then get the job done.
AT the christmas party club boss Gus thanked Belinda Colwell for her long-time contribution to the Flippers and presented her with a gift for her efforts over the past decade. Belinda’s youngest son Nick took out the daily double when he won the bombing and belly flop competitions at his last Flippers meet before he heads off to TAS next year. Hopefully Belinda and Nick won’t severe all ties with the club.
