COMPETITION leaders Kentucky went within an ace of defeating Rugby League at the Park last Saturday despite having to bat with just eight players.

Chasing 140 Kentucky, were well and truly at 4/127 but then lost their final three wickets for the addition of just one run in the space of eight deliveries.
Number three batsman Steph Sweeney gave his team every chance of victory when he put on 65 runs with Dave Woodley (21) and 38 runs with Daniel Boyd (17). When Sweeney was finally out for 68 caught by Aaron Johnson off the bowling of Michael Boyd Kentucky were still in the hunt at 5/127. Boyd snared 3/34, Johnson picked up 2/42 while Peter Mooney and Ben Cross took one wicket each.
Earlier in the day openers Boyd and Rob Laurie put on a stand of 59 before the former went for 28 caught by Greg Buckland off young off spinner Daniel Boyd.
Laurie and Mooney then added 33 for the second wicket when Laurie was bowled by Daniel Blanch for 38. Mooney went on to compile 21 runs while Johnson notched up 25 and Wayne Boyd 16 before his son Daniel had him caught behind by Bob Jex.
The off spinner finished with 3.38 off his 10 over’s, Blanch took 2/15 and Woodley snared the final two wickets to fall as League finished seven wickets down.
Out at John Oxley Sportsground Colts didn’t have it all their own way despite chasing just 88 set by Round Swamp. Swamp opener Barry Hoy scored exactly half the runs which included five boundaries in his 44 runs.
The only other batsman to reach double figures was Luke Wellings with 16 and out of the nine batsmen that played five failed to score although Liam Brennan did remain 0 not out. Colts all-rounder Stu Halliday finalised the Swamp innings with a hat trick and returned the figures of 4/26, Max Murray grabbed 2/16 and Ed Blomfield 2/23.
In reply Colts lost batsman at regular intervals and at one stage were 8/85 with Matt See having retired hurt after scoring 14 runs.
Man of the match Halliday top scored with 30 runs and opener Hugh Morgan contributed 132. Bill Wake captured 2/15, opener Luke Wellings 2/20 and Brennan 2/23 whereas Thomas Hoy and Lee Harrison picked up a wicket each.
This Saturday Colts play League at the Park while Swamp travel to Uralla. Points score: Kentucky 32, Colts 30, Uralla 30, Swamp 24 and League 24.
