This week we speak to Jackie Jarvisto who has been a volunteer at St Vincent de Paul in Walcha for two years.
“I wanted to give something back to a community that is very special to me,” Jackie said.
“I have made lasting friendships and got to know so many people. The more you put into it the more you get out of it.
“My main volunteer day is a Wednesday each week but as I am also the treasurer for the Walcha branch I am fairly heavily involved.”
Jackie says the volunteers tend to be like a big family with members dropping in all the time and lending a hand when needed.
“It is so much more than I ever expected and has given so much more back to me personally,” she said.
“I think the challenge is making people feel that they are worthwhile and the people at Vinnies are always ready with a kind word and a listening ear.
“It’s not just a matter of volunteering it’s being part of a big family and growing with and getting to know you community. It’s fun.”
