Sometime ‘Merlin’ (on the Aberbaldie Road) resident Jack King has been named in the County Cockatoo squad after his team New England won the NRMA Colts Shield at Bowral a fortnight ago. NE upset Illawarra 23-13 in the final played in extremely wet conditions.
The Walcha Bowling Club A grade singles final scheduled to be played this Saturday will be a unique decider as two brothers are up against each other. Three-time club champion Kyle Goodwin (2008, 2011 and 2013) takes on older brother Nathan who is yet to win a singles bowls title, but has won the pairs twice with Denis Makeham in 2010 and then the following year ‘Alf’ teamed up with his father Steve to win.
No doubt the Goodwin boys’ old man ‘Normie’ will be an interested onlooker who is proud of his sons’ achievements. The boys have a fair way to go before they catch the old bloke who has won no less than 10 A grade titles in 1993, ’94, ’96 to ’99, 2002, ’04, ’10 and ’12. Not that Normie would make a mention of the fact to either Kyle or ‘Alf’.
Walcha Rugby League teams rattled up 120 points between them last Saturday at Quirindi when the Roos downed the Grasshoppers 64-16 and the Jillaroos rounded up the Grashopperettes 56-0. Teenage winger Lee Harrison scored 20 points for the Roos from a hat trick of tries and goal kicker Rhiannon Moran racked up 16 of her own when she raised the flags on eight occasions.
A couple of crucial penalties, one when Walcha were in possession of the ball, didn’t help the Rams’ cause when they went down to Gunnedah 34-27 in their Central North fixture at Gunnedah last Saturday. Apparently the Rams were right in the game up until the final minutes before vital mistakes cost them dearly.
This Saturday the Roos and Jillaroos are at home to Kootingal who are both coming off wins over Werris Creek 34-22 in the men’s and 26-18 in the girls. Kooty are currently leading the second division while their Ladies League Tag Team are in equal second with the Jillaroos.
The Rams are on the road again this time to Tamworth to tackle the Pirates who went down 21-15 to Narrabri last weekend. According to Monday’s NDL the Rams are presently running fifth in the Central North Competition one point ahead of Pirates, Tamworth and Inverell.
There has been several changes to the Golf Club Program book with the first taking place with the postponed NSWGA Keno Mixed 4BBB qualifier rescheduled to be played this Sunday where John and Jane McLaren will be donating trophies to be played in conjunction.
The NSWGA 4BBB men’s qualifying round contested in February has been declared null and void as it was played under a stableford format instead of par. The rescheduled event is now set down for May 31. Playing fees for both days will be $20 per player as both competitions are state events.
That now means the Stablford 4BBB event scheduled for this Sunday with prizes supplied by John Mann and Bradden Jackson has been now shifted to May 31. The Harry Ding Memorial Trophy pencilled in for that day now moves to June 14. Simple really.
