Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said recent drought conditions have impacted on many rural communities across NSW, including Walcha.
“Walcha’s current town water supply is heavily dependent on an off-river storage, which is sourced from the Macdonald River,” Mr Anderson said.
“In recent years, Walcha Council’s ability to supply town water had been severely impacted due to the continuing dry conditions.
“On two separate occasions the river has stopped flowing for extended periods, preventing Council from pumping to the off-river storage.”
Walcha Council mayor Janelle Archdale said that she was excited about the $600,000 grant.
“Walcha’s water security has been under pressure for the past 16 months.
“It is also crucial that we have these funds to secure our town’s water supply following the announcement that we are facing an El-Nino event,” Mrs Archdale said.
Mr Anderson said the money would help “potentially drought-proof” the town’s water supply.
He said the government was committed to helping local councils and water authorities to deliver reliable, affordable and sustainable water supplies and sewerage systems through the Country Towns Water Supply and Sewerage Program.
