Hunter River Lancers to support Anzac Day ceremonies
AS ANZAC Day approaches, the Tamworth-based 12th/ 16th Hunter River Lancers are preparing to support communities and veterans in the commemorations.
Unit recruiting officer, Warrant Officer Class 2 Roger Edwards, said the day was one of the most important days on the calendar.
The unit will be supporting commemorations in Tamworth, Kootingal, Werris Creek, Gunnedah, Manilla and Curlewis as well as a cemetery service on April 21 at 5pm in Tamworth.
The Armidale and Muswellbrook units will support events in their nearby towns.
“The unit’s history goes back to Gallipoli and Beersheba,” Warrant Officer Edwards said.
“It’s a day to remember all operations and a number of our members are currently deployed overseas on operations.
“Anzac Day is significant to us because we lost guys at Gallipoli and that was their first experience of combat.”
Regimental historian Major Wayne Clarke said the unit was also readying to mark 100 years since the Charge of Beersheba on October 31, 1917.
“Anyone with Light Horse photos, the regiment is interested in looking at scanning pictures for the collection,” he said.
For those wanting to continue on the regiment’s history and join the army reserve, there are plenty of positions available. There are information nights every Tuesday night from 7pm and if interested, you can call 0408 615 458.
