A 24-year-old Inverell man was stopped at 9.15pm on Friday, then was arrested and taken to Walcha Police Station.
He was later charged with the offences of supply prohibited drug, possess prohibited drug and possession of equipment for administering prohibited drugs.
A bong was found in the car during the search.
Walcha police Sergeant Anthony Smith said that more than 0.75 grams of MDMA was deemed an indictable amount.
“He had 1.59 grams more than the trafficable quantity,” he said.
“It was excellent police work. The two blokes who were doing it – one of them is a former Armidale policeman - they’re just very good at what they do.”
The man was pulled over as he was travelling faster than the speed limit.
“The police officers stopped him and, as a result of their demeanour and the information they learned through conversation and the computer checks, they decided to do a search of the vehicle,” Sergeant Smith said.
“That’s when they located the MDMA on the back seat.”
Sergeant Smith said that the lower crime rate in Walcha meant that police had more opportunities to engage in these kinds of police work.
“At times we can be a little more proactive in certain things that we do and that’s one of them.
“That was certainly one of the times that police won.”
The man was charged with the offences and appeared before Walcha Local Court on Tuesday.
“This is a perfect example that police are out there patrolling and stopping vehicles,” Sergeant Smith said.
“if you choose to be someone who transports drugs in your vehicle, take this as a lesson that police will stop you and you could find yourself in court.
“It’s certainly a serious matter, there’s no doubt about that.”
