CAN’T Touch This touch footy team created Walcha touch history when they won their D Grade grand final 5 -2 against Shags Boys last Sunday. They became the first team to lose a preliminary final and then go on to win the premiership decider. How could they do that you may ask? Simple really - the team that defeated them in the preliminary final – Top Shelf Rockies - had too many players involved in the church Harvest Festival last Sunday and couldn’t play at their allotted time, so they sent Can’t Touch This to bat for them instead.

BACK in 2003, a team named Whatevers went right through their competition without winning a game, although they did record a two-all draw with New One come semi-finals. It was a totally different story though as they didn’t lose a game and went on to win the competition from fifth position (five team grand-final semis) when they defeated Mountain Motors 3 - 2 in extra time with both teams down to four player each.
WHATEVERS team members were Lachlan Brown Lacey and Bonnie Green, Matt and Toby Smith, Kristy Latham, Flint Henry and Daniel Green. Some fairly handy players among that mob. Mountain Motors consisted of Chris Feltham, Darren and Mark Mackaway, Colin Swanton, Simon Wall, Tony Donnelly, Evan Dunn, Steve Scherf, Graeme Wall and Bill Wake.
LAST Sunday, Bowling Club Wizards played in their 10th grand final in 12 years, and after going down to Riamukka Mustangs, now have a 50-50 record of five wins and five runners-up. Only four members of the original squad remain: Kevin Mathews, Steve Wiggins, Trevor Gibson and Gerry Moran, although he didn’t play on Sunday. Good effort boys, and glad I was a member of the team for some of the journey.
RIAMUKKA Mustangs player Chris Watts has now won four consecutive grand finals with four different teams - Turtle Men, Dekka’s Crew, ABTs and now Mustangs. Just for good measure, Wattsy was named player of the match in the grand final.
BOWLING Club Cougars started off as Commercial Cougars in the 1991-92 season and in the past 26 years have now played in 16 grand finals, including the B Grade deader last Sunday. They won nine straight A Grade titles, 10 overall, one B Grade title and have been runners-up five times. Only four members of the original squad remain (heard that somewhere before) – Barry Hoy, Ross Green, Steph Sweeney and Deon Lawrence, although Steph and “Longhandle” didn’t play last Sunday.
LIFE Membership was bestowed on Ian Cameron, Kevin Terrier, Bill Bullock and Anne Martin last Sunday by the Walcha Touch Football when they held their annual presentations at the Newie. “Pevo” and “Camo” were on hand to collect their awards, but Bill and Anne were unable to attend due to prior commitments.
At the 19th
LAST Sunday, an Australia Regional Bank Stroke medal round was played in conjunction with a trophy donated by Jack Ottara where Col Berry was declared the winner after carding a 65 nett which also gave him the B Grade mug.
In A Grade, Tim Beaumont was the winner on 68 nett which equated to the best scatch score of 78 and he also won the putting competition with 22 jabs.
Sweepstakes went to Tim Beaumont, Lee Fletcher 71, Miles Archdale 72 and Jamie Bowden 73 on a countback from Alex Gill.
Sharpest Shooter at the third pin was Tim Beaumont, while no player was clever enough to reach the beach on 18. The coverted “Pink Shirt” went to Phil Perry for most putts.
Out west at Walgett, the 2017 NSW 4BBB Sandgreen Championships were washed out, meaning Wayne and Andrew Brennan will remain reigning champions for one more year after they won the title last year.
Wayne teamed up with Andrew Bowden while Steph Sweeney and Peter Norbury, Tony Asmus and Willy Brennan also flew the Walcha Flag at Walgett, although it was just for a few holes on Saturday before play was abandoned. This Sunday is a stableford round for John McLaren’s trophy. Clubhouse duty - Barry Hoad.
Jillaroos Views
Walcha commenced their 2017 Group 4 Second Division Ladies League Tag Campaign with an 18 -6 victory over Uralla at the Park last Saturday.
Four minutes had elapsed on the clock when Kimberley Lisle swooped on a cross kick from Rhiannon Moran to score out wide in the “Mill Hole” corner.
Prolific points scorer Moran added the extras with a great kick to give the Jillaroos a 6 - 0 lead which they held up until the 13th minute Mark when the “Tigeresses” scored their only try.
When referee Christian Pethybridge waved the conversion away, a couple of Walcha players informed him the ball had actually gone over which would have gone undefeated because they are usually no line officials in league tag.
The ref mentioned what great sportsmanship it was when he was having a spell at halftime and the score was being adjusted.
At the 10-minute mark of the second session, speedy Nicola Hoy showed great evasive skills to score at the kiosk corner before Moran landed the conversion from the sideline.
With five minutes remaining on the clock, Shae Partridge pulled out the play of the day when she sprinted 85 metres to score under the posts after she latched onto a loose ball, leaving Moran the easiest of her three conversions.
Coach Kevin Creighton was very happy with his team’s performance, especially in defence. Club points - 3 Ruth France; 2 Kim Lisle, Shae Patridge. Group 3 Nic Hoy 1; Rhiannon Moran. Player’s Player Annie Eveleigh. This Saturday, both the Roos and Jillaroos travel to Bendemeer.
