IT was very sad to hear Trish White suddenly left this world late last week. I’ve been lucky enough to have known Trish ever since she came to Walcha to run the Apsley Hotel with her then husband Ian Norris. Condolences to Trish’s husband Mick, all other family members and her many friends. There will be a service for Trish this afternoon at the Catholic Church from 2pm.

ON a much lighter note, Dear Old Dad I.J. celebrated 85 years on the planet on Tuesday after warming up for the occasion with a few refreshments at the Newie last Saturday followed by a family lunch on Sunday. A big thank you to 2AD announcer Peter Raymond for putting over a birthday call for dad and to Sean Cross who organised to have his favourite song Mandrake played on his milestone day.
STILL on birthdays, Walcha Central School “head honcho” Mark Hall probably didn’t expect to celebrate some of his 59th birthday taking a leisurely stroll to town from the waste management centre (rubbish tip) with his wife Tiana last Sunday. The only reason for the unplanned walk was they had been locked in while unloading some green waste right on closing time. Shortly after, I received a phone call while scoring the ladies league tag game at Bendemeer from Mark seeking some suggestions about how he was going to get his vehicle out of the enclosure. We soon sorted it out, and Mark did see the funny side of the whole incident where some others may not have.
AT a recent Walcha Show committee meeting, Miss Showgirl Tanisha Daniel was in attendance with her son Matthew who was crawling around the floor at one stage when committee member Warwick Johnson picked up the young bloke and bounced him on his knee for a while. When “Wok” went to put Matthew back down, the little fella crashed to the floor prompting Warwick to suggest he wasn’t real steady on his feet. Tanisha responded with “that’s because he can’t walk yet”, which brought the house down and left “Wok” slightly red-faced. Heard that Matthew was uninjured after his fall and that he can now walk. Little wonder why, really he probably thought he didn’t want to go through that again.
THE gremlins were back at work last week when council general manager Jack O’Hara was listed in the Big Wigs Footy Tipsters of the week as Jack Oltara. Not long back, Johnny got a run as Jack Ottara which makes me wonder how long it will be before he gets Jack Ottara. Only time will tell.
INDOOR hockey finalise their season this Saturday at the bowling club with presentation night and it’s not too late to purchase a ticket which you can do by contacting Rachael Laurie on 6777 2665. All the action commences at 6.30pm.
DURING his recent trip to the NSW Sandgreen Golf Championship at Walgett Moons Nursery, CEO Steph Sweeney ordered an extra lamb cutlet with a meal but only ate half of it. A little while later, the “golden-haired wonder child” toddled off with his fishing rod and the half cutlet after declaring to his golf mate Wayne Brennan that you could catch fish out west on anything – including a cutlet. The next morning, “Brenno” was full of anticipation when he visited Stevie thinking he may see a yellowbelly or a cod, but that didn’t happen. When quizzed about his lack of success, Steph’s reply was, “It’s all catch and release out here”.
LAST chance for a swim as the 2016-17 Walcha Swimming Season will finalise this Sunday, April 2 at 6pm, the same day as daylight savings ends. Don’t forget to put your clocks back an hour for Sunday morning. Let’s see who gets caught this year.
The only reason for the unplanned walk was they had been locked in while unloading some green waste right on closing time.
WALCHA Flippers president Angus Warden will compete in the NSW Masters Swimming Championships this weekend where he has entered the 50m butterfly and freestyle, 200m individual medley and 4 X 50m relay. Gus will be joined in the relay by his father Andrew, sister Lucy and mother-in-law Jo Nivison who has been churning out laps of late here in the Walcha Pool.
ALTHOUGH she wasn’t attending the Flippers end of season party and presentation day, former club secretary Judy Eckford lined up a cake for daughters Briar and Sarah as their contribution to the party. Jude left the cake in the hands of her good mate Bob Beet to drop off and a bit later in the day when she caught up with the girls, asked them if they had sampled some of the cake. “What cake, we haven’t seen any cake,” was their reply.
THE next time Judy saw Bob, she asked him what happened to the cake. He informed her it was on his table at home and what’s more, didn’t taste too bad either. Bob somehow got his wires crossed and probably thought the cake was a goodwill gesture for taking Briar and Sarah to squad training each Thursday while Judy was at work.
BIG Wigs of the Week - Bowlies - Glenn Partridge; Vet Supplies - Kyle Goodwin; Newie - Wayne Brennan, Kobi Denniss, Bob Watts, Jack Abraham; Apsley- Wayne Brennan, Tony Sozou; Prime Meats - Stephen Dunn (all picked the card); West End Store - Mel Hawkins 14 pts . That means Stephen Dunn (Parramatta), Bob Watts (Tigers), Wayne Brennan and Kyile Goodwin (Knights) all must have went against their team to pick the card.
