The Senate has demanded Defence Minister Marise Payne release details of Australian military sales to Saudi Arabia that were approved as that country faced claims of war crimes.

Defence has approved four exports in the past year and Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne travelled to Riyadh in December to promote military wares to senior government figures.
The government has so far refused to say what the approved products are or who makes them, claiming all details are commercial-in-confidence.
But in a rare show of unity between crossbench members, Labor and the Greens, the Senate voted 39 to 22 to push for answers.
"Saudi Arabia is one of the most oppressive regimes on earth, and it is presently engaged in a horrific assault on its Yemeni neighbours," Greens defence spokesperson Scott Ludlam said after moving the motion.
Since March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states has bombed Yemen's north in strikes against Houthi rebels, which overthrew the government and receive some backing from Iran.
More than 10,000 civilians, mostly Yemeni, have been killed in the conflict and the United Nations has found the coalition strikes "may amount to war crimes".
The Dutch Parliament banned military exports to the country last year and Britain's sales are being challenged in its High Court on humanitarian law grounds.
"Instead of enabling the targeting of schools, hospitals, ports and weddings, Australia should be loudly condemning them and pushing for a universal arms embargo," Senator Ludlam said.
The decision to approve military exports rests with the Department of Defence, which assesses sales against five criteria: international obligations, national security, human rights, regional security and foreign policy.
The Senate motion requires Ms Payne to table, by 6pm on Thursday, "any documents relating to approvals for military exports to Saudi Arabia since January 2016" as well as Mr Pyne's itinerary on his tour to the kingdom.
Crossbench senators including Pauline Hanson, Jacqui Lambie, David Leyonhjelm, Derryn Hinch and Cory Bernardi teamed up with Labor and the Greens to pass the motion.
Ms Payne and other Liberal MPs voted against it.
Fairfax Media has submitted questions to the Defence and Defence Industry ministers asking if they will comply with the orders.
