Walcha Pony Club’s Matthew Ireland sped his way to stellar results at the sporting and campdrafting state championships.
Ireland placed in the top 10 in the barrels, bonfield bounce, keyhole, bending and three mug sporting events and collected a third in the campdraft.
He joined forces with Wingham’s Daniel and Katie Kelly and Breadalbane’s Jack Hart in the campdraft to win champion team. Glen Innes’ Edith Newbury, Sam Donnelly, Shannon Williamson and Brendon Weiss were also part of the Zone 13 team.
The zone’s chief instructor, Belinda Williamson, said it was an outstanding effort by all members.
“It is a credit to our Zone 13 riders to be bringing home individual awards within the top 10 of the best of NSW and Queensland. They represented our zone with excellent horsemanship,” she said.
The campdraft was testing with impenetrable dust and grey cattle.
She said the campdraft was particularly tough for the riders, given the conditions.
“The campdraft was testing with impenetrable dust and grey cattle. Matthew had a score of 88 in the second round to give him enough points for third and to be named in the State team,” she said.
