Walcha to host Quirindi in Central North season opener

It has been one of their trademarks, and speed outwide again looks like being a weapon for Walcha.

The Rams lock horns with Quirindi at Walcha on Saturday to kick off their 2017 Central North campaign.

“The boys are itching to go. It’s been a long time coming – the season,” Rams co-coach Hyde Thompson said.

He said they are shaping up pretty well.

“They’ve trained really hard since the end of February,” he said.

“Everyone is expecting to do better than last year.”

While Country rep Soni Halanukonuka has moved to Newcastle, they have probably gained more than they’ve lost.

“The backs will be bolstered by a couple of pretty decent halves,” Thompson said.

They’ve also picked up Dom Bower and Pat Keen from the New England competition, and Bower particularly will add to their speed.

“We are very quick in the outside backs,” he said.

The challenge is creating the opportunities to exploit that, a lot of which will rest on the packs’ shoulders.

“We’re looking pretty good in the forwards,” Thompson said.

“Sandy Cameron is a big addition. He’s back playing.”

They had a trial at Coffs Harbour the other week, and in difficult conditions performed well.  One of the things that stood out for Thomspon was their defence, especially in the forwards close to the ruck.

Saturday will also be Ladies Day. Entry for ladies is free and funds raised from the wood raffle being held will be donated to the McGrath Foundation. So dress in splashes of pink for the day and night.

Kick-off is at 2pm.
