To help assess the students work local amateur astronomer Chris Wyatt came in to listen to the students present their project.
“Chris was able to discuss with the students the astronomical features of their models and ways they could have improved the projects,” said Science Teacher Samantha Bayley
“Students were actively engaged with the task and were able to make clear connections between aspects they presented and what they had learnt in class.”
An additional criteria was that the model had to incorporate elements that made it suitable for the visually impaired.
“Students were asked to incorporate a tactile component to their project,” Ms Bayley said. “They did this by making the surfaces of their spheres bumpy, or by including braille labels. Some students had made audio recordings to be played alongside their projects so people could interact with the model while listening to instruction or explanations of what was happening. I would like to thank Chris for coming in and sharing his expertise with the class.”
