We finally had the numbers for reserve grade, plus a few, and it made a huge difference, with this makeshift team giving it to a sizeable Gunnedah.
There was a solid defensive effort by all, but stand-out hits from Jock Fortescue and returned Ram Ed Blomfield. Despite going down 17 to 12, this team has great potential, especially with consistency in players going. Three points Jock Fortescue, two points Ed Blomfield, one point Lachy Fletcher, players’ player Ed Blomfield.
In first grade, the first half was full of solid hits and strong defence from both sides. Gunnedah's defence held strong time and time again.
At half time it was a nil-all draw. Walcha came out after half-time firing, but unfortunately Gunnedah put the first points on the board with an unconverted try. Not long after, Ed Churchill made a break only to be pulled down centimetres from the line and popped a ball to Alistair King, who scored the easiest of tries. Simon Newton converted this and with two converted penalties, Walcha finished the game 13-5.
Three points Simon Newton, two points Sandy Cameron, one point Tom Hoy, players’ player Simon Newton.
This weekend we make the long journey to Narrabri.
