SAD to hear former “Boree” grazier Walcha Rams and BaaBaas stalwart, the Reverend Freddie Miller, left this world on May 16 and will be laid to rest this Saturday in his native Toronto, Canada, by his daughter Christina. Freddie’s service will be held at the footy ground of the Toronto Nomads under the goalposts of one of three clubs he helped found years ago.

... at least the PA at the bowling club was working, but at one stage during the presentations, I wished it wasn’t when there was a mention that the visiting team was Manilla not Werris Creek.
AFTER spending 21 years with his bride Caroly Laurie at “Boree”, Freddie decided it was time to return home just under three years ago due to his deteriorating health. Personally, I was fortunate enough to be associated with Freddie through our love of sports which included the Baa Baas, and when he took leave from writing “Bleatings”, the Rams newsletter he started under his pen name “Rudy the Ram”, I filled in for him on a few occasions under “Melvin the Merino”. May the Reverend Freddie Miller rest in peace.
CROUDACE Street resident, Parramatta supporter and one of nature’s good guys, Ken Hoy, reaches the memorable milestone of 90 years on the planet this Saturday. Just for something a bit different, Ken will celebrate a birthday breakfast with family members to kick off proceedings. Here’s hoping the former Round Swamp cricketer, Walcha council grader operator and my favourite father-in-law has a great day.
CERTAINLY no one is to blame, but unfortunately, the PA system at the Park is an embarrassment, which was never more evident that when it was non-operational before a minute’s silence was held for Kenny Martin last Saturday. My apologies for that, but hopefully everyone was aware it was held in respect for a long-time supporter of both the Walcha and Werris Creek football clubs. A Ken Martin Memorial Shield will be made and played for each time the Roos clash with the Magpies – something both clubs quickly agreed on.
FORTUNATELY, at least the PA at the bowling club was working, but at one stage during the presentations, I wished it wasn’t when there was a mention that the visiting team was Manilla not Werris Creek. Instantaneously, I started to cop it, none more so than from Jillaroos coach Kevin Creighton who encouraged the Creek players and supporters to join in.
ON a brighter note, wasn’t it great to see 2016 Roos Premiership winning co-captain Jason Latham make a comeback last Saturday. Although Jase usually plays five-eighth (No 6), he filled in at hooker (No 9) against the Magpies and while he was warming up, his son Corbin yelled out to him informing his father his number was upside down. It certainly amused the people present in the nearby vicinity.
THE combination of a few things will see Maureen Duck and Kevin Levingston close the doors of their West End Store next Wednesday, May 31. “Pet” and “Porky” took over from John and Judy Smolders 17 years ago and would like to thank their valued customers for their support. Maureen indicated overheads and health reasons had a lot to do with their decision, while the closing of the Walcha Saleyards was probably the final nail in the coffin.
THE West End Store footy tipping competition will continue until the end of the season and each Thursday, where possible, the door will be open for a coffee and a chat from 3.30pm. Next Wednesday, all remaining stock will be up for offer at half price until closing time. Pet and Porky have been sponsors of the Walcha Rugby League since the club started playing footy again, something both the Roos and Jillaroos appreciate. All the best at whatever it is that you decide to do, Pet and Porky.
BIG wigs of the week: Apsley Arms - Suzie Foster, Guy Smith; BC - Kristy Lawrence, Gerry Moran, Wilba Haslem; Newie Petra Evans, Neil Breasley, Raggie Handsaker (all picked the card); Vet Supplies - Doin Bird 14 pts; West End Store - Troy Hawkins 14 pts. No standout scores from the previous round, but a special mention to Prime Meats tipster Nerida Hoy who failed to score a point.
JILLAROOS player Ruth France misplaced her footy boots, so she visited the op shop and not only purchased a pair at a bargain basement price of $1, but the boots were also green and gold. When Ruth went to pay, she only had a $2 coin so she said keep the change. The new footwear must have worked because Ruth scored a try later in the day.
BEST of luck to Roos backrower Ben Green when he heads to the Dubbo Show this weekend to compete in the final of the Sports Shear competition after qualifying in third position. Benny has put in solid performances during the lead up rounds and expects the final to consist of trimming around 10 sheep. Go gettem’, Benny.
OUR local newsagency operators Quinton and Karina Titmus were over the moon when there was not one but two local major winners in Powerball No 1095. One lucky punter pocketed $64,226.50 while another collected $6847.45. Both are known to a few people around town, but they will not be revealed here. Good luck to both of them.
