But, on Saturday, community members were invited inside the Walcha Fire Station to get a glimpse into life as a firefighter.
Walcha station commander Peter Dunn said more than 30 children attended on the day despite the rain.
“They got to see a bit of everything, the fire station, inside the truck, the uniforms,” Mr Dunn said.
“We also let them have a go on the hoses.”
Mr Dunn said among the children who attended, there were a few who seemed interested in a future career as a firefighter.
“You never know, and the kids who came along seemed pretty interested,” he said.
“They really enjoyed having a go using the big hoses.
“It gave them a good idea of some of the things we do as a firefighter.”
Those that attended took home a bag with a helmet, fire safety books and lego.
The Fire Station Open Day initiative was held statewide, with a number of New England fire stations getting involved.
