IT was extremely sad to hear Tim Jackson lost his lengthy fight with ill health earlier in the week, something he has been battling for a very large part of his life. A better kid you wouldn’t meet. Sincere condolences go to his parents Bradden and Sue, sister Adrianne, along with all other family members and Tim’s many friends. Sometimes things are so unfair.

LAST Friday, Brian Kenneth Swift was farewelled, firstly at St Patrick’s Church and then at the bowling club where large crowds gathered at both venues. “Swifty” was transported to and from the church on the back of a Brian Smith Transport prime mover, certainly something unique, and the family portraits decorating his coffin were a nice touch also.
HOPEFULLY, from now on, we might be able to start the column on a lighter note because the last few weeks have been sad affairs. May all the people who have left this world during that time now rest in peace.
A BERBERIS or barbary bush has very sharp thorns, something Walcha Council water and sewer operator Robert Powell is now fully aware of. During a water-main break in Fitzroy Street recently, Robert started pulling vegetation out of the flower bed where the water was escaping when he grabbed hold of one bare-handed, much to his regret.
ROBERT was still paying the price a few days later. Hopefully, Rob has now picked all the thorns out of his hands and there is absolutely no doubt he won't grab another berberis bush without the aid of a pair of gloves like he did the first time.
DON’T forget the Bowling Club Monster Auction this Saturday, July 1, from 5.30pm, following the footy presentations after Walcha play Dungowan at the Park. There are a great array of items on offer something for everyone. All funds raised got towards the upgrading of the club greens.

RIDDLE me this one, Batman. Somehow, Bonnie Leigh Smith managed 10 points in the Vet Supplies P.T.W. competition but when she filled in the card for her mother Katie at the Newie, she picked the card. Not that Katie would have been too concerned, she collected bonus points.
DURING recent times, Legge Street resident Billy Fletcher has experienced a few hassles when he was having a pint at the Newie which involved losing a winning ticket which he crumpled up and threw in the bin. By all accounts, Newie regular Steve Hammond had been reminding BIll regularly of his gambling misfortune but probably has let up a bit this week. The story goes Steve had a winning ticket of his own but somehow it managed to go through the washing machine, making is slightly difficult for the payout machine to read.

STILL on the gamble... it was my turn to outlay for the Apsley Punters Club last Saturday with two of my racing selections – Eagle Point and Crisis Point - both at Moe. Somehow, Eagle Point became I am that Dude which Newie 2IC Bob Denniss then offered to cancel, but yours truly was far too clever for that. Eagle Point ran scared and hopefully Crisis Point has finally finished by now. Sorry about that, fellow Apsley Punters Club members.
LAST Sunday, Newie co-captain Bob Denniss and former English wrestler Mal Ballard headed west to compete in the Manilla Open and to say they had an adventurous trip would be seriously understating the fact.
BEFORE they got to Walcha Road, they had busted the windscreen in the golf cart they were towing and then somehow, on the back road to Manilla via Moombi, the dynamic duo zigged when they should have zagged and practically ended up in Tamworth. Then throw in an unfortunate collision with a kangaroo along the way. That didn’t help. At least the boys had some Manilla success, managing to win the back nine holes competition.
STILL on the subject of golf... former Walcha mayor Bill Heazlett didn’t get away to the ideal start last Sunday when he putted the three of his first four holes. After some helpful tuition from club champion Wayne Brennan on the use of his flat stick, the former mayor did get back on track and even missed picking up the wooden spoon, much to his delight.
OUT at the Manilla Golf Open, our local club president Allan Green was about to come to the rescue after his partner Willy Brennan hit his ball over the fence. Just off the green on a par five for his third shot, “Big Al” was in line to do something great until he three-putted the green and strolled off with just one stableford point, disappointed as he had two handicap shots on the hole.
THE “pulverising pair” of Allan Green and Willy Brennan did meet with success though when they finished runners-up in the Manilla nett event. Well done to them both.
