Walcha cricket on its way
THE 2017-18 New England Vets Cricket season commences this Sunday here at the Park with a match between the Bushie (Walcha/Uralla) Armidale and the Armidale Royal Townies. It is a 40 over game for over 50 and 60-year-olds, but even guys in their late 40s are permitted to play. Rowan Chandler and Nick Endacott are the Bushies organisers, so if you are interested in having a game, call around to the Park on Sunday just before 10am – it might be time you picked up a bat or ball!
LOCAL cricket also commences this Saturday when Premiers Uralla do battle with Colts at John Oxley Sportsground, and Kentucky take on Round Swamp at the Park. Rugby League have the bye this weekend. Best of luck to all the teams – not only on the sporting field, but also with the recruitment of new players for the season ahead.
Talking football
TOUCH footballers should start dusting off their gear, as the 2017-18 local season is getting closer to kicking off. The annual general meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 11 commencing at the Apsley Hotel at 5.30pm. Could all teams intending on nominating to play this season please have a representative present at that meeting.
THE Walcha Rugby League Club will be conducting their annual general meeting this Sunday, October 8, commencing at 3pm at the bowling club. President Peter Berry indicated at the club’s recent presentation night that he won’t be seeking re-election, and there would be no surprise if a few other positions are vacated as well. Hopefully, there will be replacements to step up to the plate to keep Walcha Rugby League alive next season.
IT will be an interesting Group 4 competition next season with six second division clubs from 2017 – Walcha, Bundarra, Barraba, Bendemeer, Uralla and Manilla –moved to a new reserve grade competition. That competition also includes Gunnedah, Narrabri, North Tamworth and Collegians. No doubt officials feel the first division competition should be the premier one, but why fix something that isn’t broken, namely the successful second division competition.
