The Walcha Pony Club was formed in 1949, and the following year the inaugural annual week-long camp was held. Since then every September local children have been joined by others from across the region and beyond for a week of horse riding lessons and activities.
“The biggest change since the early days is the range of activities,” said life member Ross Green.
“In the beginning it was mainly flatwork and cross country. Now there is Bison, campdraft and polocrosse.”
Fellow life members and patrons Hazel Cameron and Beulah Green agreed.
“The horses and equipment are definitely better now,” said Mrs Green.
“And there are a lot more sporting events,” Mrs Cameron said.
This year there are 52 children aged from three to seventeen years taking part in the camp to hone their equestrian skills.
Life member and former chief instructor Maria Ireland said the number of participants was not as big as it has been in the past.
“One year when I was instructing there were 120 children at camp,” she said.
Walcha Pony Club president Annyka Overton said the lunch was a great opportunity to have conversations about the camp’s history.
“I’ve already heard a few funny stories,” she said.
