CONGRATULATIONS to Wayne Brennan on winning his maiden Walcha A Grade Golf Championship when he clinically palmed off any challenges runner-up Anthony Smith threw at him during the final 18 holes. He drained a few lengthy putts which just left a smile on Smithy’s dial while shaking his head. “Brenno” follows in the footsteps of his youngest son Andrew who won the title last year but wasn’t eligible to play because he has joined the professional ranks. As far as I am aware, the only other father and son duo to win the local club championship is T.C. Fenwicke and his son Peter.

WELL done also to 84-year-old John Mann who shot the lights out last Sunday, not only shooting under his age, but by five shots with a 79 off the beater. “Ming” has achieved the “under his age” feat on numerous occasions and you would be brave to back against him doing it again. A pat on the back for president Allan Green on winning C Grade by one shot from another 84-year-old, Max Holstien, and to captain Will Brennan who took out the Veterans division.
WALCHA Touch Football have their grand finals and presentation day scheduled for this Sunday with all the action kicking off at John Oxley Sportsground from 9am. Following the A Grade decider, all players and supporters are invited back to the New England Hotel for the prize giving and refreshments. Four new life members will be rewarded for their efforts over the years and although Anne Martin and Bill Bullock can’t make it, hopefully Kevin Ferrier and Ian Cameron can.
CONGRATULATIONS to the 11 Walcha Central School students who have been selected to represent the North West Swimming team at the State Championships early in April. From the secondary department, Chloe Mackaway and Chyna Smith will swim individual events and three relays where they team up with Ashleigh Wall and Briar Eckford in both the senior girls freestyle and medley then with Murdoc Chawner and Thomas Micallef in the Central Schools mixed freestyle.
ALSO heading to Homebush are primary reps Zac Warden and his sister Jemma in individual events while Jemma joins Sarah Morris, Poppy McLaren and Bella Mooney in the Junior girls freestyle relay. Best of luck to all the above-mentioned North West representatives.
WHAT a performance by Niangala in the Earl Magee Relay in Armidale last week where they finished sixth but more importantly, sliced 23 seconds off their previous best time in the Small Schools event. Tahlia Galvia, Isabell Atkins, Brock James and Jayden Galvin have now lowered their first time at the Small Schools Carnival here at Walcha in February by an amazing 49 seconds. Well done, guys.
FORMER Walcha all-round sportsman Jack Garrad isn’t in a bad place at the moment where he is employed to look after strength and conditioning with the NSW Waratahs Rugby Squad. There is a bit more to it than a few laps around the park … gym work and analysing when a player needs a spell is just one part of his job.
Bowls from Denis Makeham...
