Every FRNSW Fire Station currently has access to a thermal imaging camera and now Walcha Fire fighters will also be able to better conduct searches and locate people who may be caught in a fire or trapped in a motor vehicle following an accident.
“A spokesperson for the FRNSW said the department had been using thermal imaging technology for several years.
“Thermal imaging is now part of normal firefighting operations and firefighters receive training on the use of thermal imaging cameras,” she said.
Mr Zikan trained Walcha FRNSW members in its use last week.
“The camera tracks heat, and can be used in both day and night emergencies to locate people, or find the hottest part of a fire so we can direct the water there,” Fire Captain, Peter Dunn said.
“The camera will also make fire fighting much safer.”
