It was the third year in succession the Hawks have won the title, having defeated the Wanderers the previous two seasons as well.
Thanks to Doug
THE Walcha Rugby Club lost one of its staunchest supporters when Doug Laurie called it a day recently. Doug was a long-term patron of the Rams, held the positions of secretary, publicity officer and reserve grade coach during his association with the club and was also New England zone secretary in 1952.
Doug Laurie was selected for the New England zone over four seasons in the early 1950s and was picked for combined country in 1953.
He was honoured to write the foreword to Memories from Scrum and Ruck, written by Graham Croker and published in 1994 to commemorate 100 years of the club’s history.
Walcha Cricket life member Ruth Cotterill will clock up 40 years with the association if she approves of taking on the position of patron for a 14th season.
D.A.C. (Doug) Laurie had life membership of the Walcha Rugby Union Club bestowed on him in 1963. May he rest in peace. Condolences to all family members and his many friends.
Give golf a try
A REMINDER about the nine-hole competition that has been added to the golf club calendar and commences this Sunday.
It is aimed at recruiting more junior players and beginners to be part of our local Walcha club and enjoy the sport of golf. Tee-off time is 12 noon - come on, give it a try. You might just like it.
For more information about the competition, please contact president Allan Green.
Cricket stalwarts
WALCHA Cricket life member Ruth Cotterill will clock up 40 years with the association if she approves of taking on the position of patron for a 14th season. Mrs Cott was association secretary from 1978 to 2004, a total of 26 terms, and she is also a life member of the Northern Tablelands Cricket Association.
FOR the past 37 years, local lawyer Owen Sweeney has been honorary auditor for the cricket association and was more than a handy cricket player in his younger days. Sadly, O.P. left this world earlier in the year and his offsider James Levingston prepared this year’s financial statements for the association.
From 1953 to 1980, John Crossman was the auditor until O.P took over, meaning Walcha Cricket has only had two auditors in the past 64 seasons.
Back for more
THIS season will mark 10 years that Luke Wellings has been in the Walcha Cricket executive committee either as secretary or treasurer, while president Ed Blomfield has been returned for an eighth term and secretary Dan Hunt has now commenced his third term in the job.
Recording secretary and publicity officer A.J. Cross has agreed to a 33rd year with both his jobs.
