SPORTING enthusiast Michael Aspinall is the new president of the Walcha Rugby League Club after he took over from Peter Berry at a second annual general meeting held at the Bowling Club last Sunday. A second meeting was required after all executive positions were vacated at the original AGM a few weeks ago and weren’t able to be filled. Thankfully, there was a better attendance this time, with Kathryn Smith taking on the treasurer's job and “Ápro’s” daughter, Ashliegh, indicating she is prepared to handle the secretary duties if no one else is willing to do so.

THE Turton Cup cricket competition is at an interesting point with one round remaining before the final. Currently, Round Swamp lead the way on 18 points followed by Colts, Uralla and Kentucky all on 12 with Rugby League on 8. There is a chance three teams could finish on 18 points which will see the countback system called into play.
LEADERS Swamp will finish on 18 points as they have the bye and can’t earn any points this Saturday, while the winner of the Colts and Kentucky match will also move to 18. If Uralla beat League, they join the other two teams on 18. If it rains, we will then have three teams on 16 and a countback is still required. League can do the recording secretary a big favour by rounding up Uralla, as a countback wouldn’t be needed then.

A NINE over par third round 81 blew the chances of 2016 Walcha Golf Champion Andrew Brennan out of the water when he competed in the National Futures trainee championships at Ballarat last week. A.J. opened up with a two under par 70 followed by a 74, then the 81 before closing with 75 to give him a 12 over par total. Andrew picked up $550 for his effort over the four days.
A COUPLE of weekends ago, local lady golfer Julie Presnell competed in the NSW Sandgreen Championships at Holbrook where she finished equal second on the Division 1 nett before being regulated to third on countback. Julie carded 72, 73 nett and also finished eighth in the scratch.
THAT was the weekend that current Walcha Champion Wayne Brennan and Owen Presnell played in the NSW Mens Sandgreen Championships where “Brenno” finished just five shorts off the pace in the Veterans division and the “Ómen” avoided the dreaded ton both days.
Talking cricket
Reigning premiers Uralla defeated Kentucky and Round Swamp rolled Rugby League on Round 4 of the Turtan Cup last Saturday.
On the synthetic out at John Oxley Sportsground, Uralla made 4/47 off their 20 overs thanks mainly to opener Jay Grills who scored 82 runs an Nick Endacott contributing 27.
Kentucky opener Brad Patridge took 2/26 off his four overs while Daniel Boyd and Daniel Blanch picked up a wicket each.
In reply, Kentucky reached 8/125, finishing 22 runs short but was boosted with an unbeaten 45 runs partnership off five overs late in the innings by Dave Woodley 28 and Daniel Blanch 12.
Man of the Match Grills grabbed 2/24 opener Cameron Kelly 4/18 and Cameron Wood 2/8.
Rugby League set Swamp a modest total of 69 after schoolboy Ben Hall top scored with an unbeaten 13 while Aaron Olsen made 12.
Opener Ben France did the early damage before finishing with 2/2 while Ben Cross, Liam Brennan, Lee Harrison and Ossie Kuhr all snared a wicket each
Swamp took 10 overs to complete their assignment without losing a wicket after Lee Harrison 35 and Steve Eveleigh 31 got the job done with any problems.
This Saturday, Kentucky will take on the Colts at the Park and Uralla will take on League at Uralla Sports Company.
