To celebrate spring, four Guyra gardens will be opening their gates to the public for the Guyra Open Gardens weekend, November 11 and 12 – and it’s all for a good cause.
“St Mary of the Angels School are putting the weekend on to raise money for the school and the new Kolora Aged Care facility, which is just about to open,” co-organiser Bronwyn Grills said.
The gardens are provided by members of the Guyra Garden Club and are 70 Starr Rd, 196 Tom’s Gully Rd, 344 Falconer Rd and corner of Manse and Urandangie St, Guyra.
Guyra gardener Robyn Jackson will open her residence “Kooralbyn” to the community.
She has been living on the two acres of land now for 30 years.
“I immediately started gardening when we moved here,” she said.
“Some of my specialties are peonies, aquilegias, salvias are coming out and there is plenty of blossom and some beautiful trees.
“I just love doing it, I really love gardening.”
Mrs Jackson said Guyra was an excellent area for gardening.
“Here is beautiful. We have red soil, a temperate climate, we have adequate rainfall and really good drainage.
“We also have a limited amount of frost here because we have an easterly influence – more breeze, more fog and we’re warmer than Armidale at night in winter.
“That means we can grow some things that they can’t.”
Weekend garden passes are $20 and gardens are open between 10am and 4pm with light refreshments and lunch available.
Mrs Jackson said all garden hosts had been busy preparing for the big weekend.
“They have all worried and scurried like me to have it as good as they possibly can,” she said.
“And they’re all quite different gardens … it’s marvellous.”
Children under 18 are free. There will also be plant stalls open and sheep manure available for purchase.
